Photo Stats – New interface

Photo Stats Just Got a Huge Upgrade (Yes, It Has a GUI Now!)

Remember a while ago when I wrote about Photo Stats? Back then, it was mostly a personal script to satisfy my own curiosity about what gear and settings I actually use versus what I think I use.

Well, what started as a small command-line project grew into something much bigger!

Together with the team at Picstome, we turned it into a full-fledged, standalone desktop application—and it now comes with a clean, super-fast visual interface for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

What’s new in Photo Stats?

If you haven’t checked it out recently, here’s what we’ve built:

  • A Brand New Native UI: No more command-line commands if you don’t want to. Just drop any photo folder into the app and get instant interactive charts.
  • Interactive Filtering: Click on any camera body, lens, focal length, or aperture bar, and every chart updates instantly. Want to see what lenses you used most in 2024 at f/1.8? Just click around.
  • Parallel EXIF Processing: We rebuilt the core engine so it reads metadata across multiple CPU cores. It can index thousands of photos in seconds.
  • Smart Duplicate Handling: If you shoot RAW + JPEG, Photo Stats automatically merges them as a single photograph so your metrics don’t get bloated.
  • 100% Local & Private: Nothing gets uploaded to the cloud. Everything stays on your computer in a tiny SQLite database inside your photo folder.

Try it out!

Photo Stats is 100% free and open-source.

If you want to know which lens is your true workhorse or figure out what gear to leave behind on your next trip, give it a spin:

Let me know if you discover any surprising trends in your shooting habits!

What You Can Do with Photo Stats

  • Analyze Your Top Gear: Instantly see your most used cameras and lenses so you know what’s actually pulling its weight.
  • Discover Your Favorite Settings: Uncover your default shooting habits—like your sweet-spot focal length, aperture, and shutter speed.
  • Track Your Timeline: See how your shooting volume changes month by month and year by year.
  • Inspect & Filter On the Fly: Click any camera body, lens, or setting bar, and every chart updates together instantly.

How Photo Stats Works

  1. Download & Launch: Banish complex setups—just open the app on macOS, Windows, or Linux.
  2. Open Your Photo Folder: Point Photo Stats to your main photography folder or drop it right in.
  3. Private Local Scan: It reads EXIF metadata in parallel directly on your CPU. Nothing ever uploads to the cloud, and RAW + JPEG pairs automatically count as a single shot.
  4. Explore Your Data: Browse interactive charts, apply filters, or export your results to CSV/JSON anytime.
